A Louisiana police pickup truck ran over a woman sunbathing on a beach Thursday afternoon, shattering her pelvis and causing internal bleeding.

Assistant Grand Isle Police Chief Norris Esponge Jr. didn’t see 24-year-old Lindsey Gordon and her friend after he circled the beach on the Gulf of Mexico once without finding anyone there, officials with the Louisiana State Police told The Times-Picayune of New Orleans. The other woman managed to get out of the way and scream for Esponge to stop the Ford F-250.

Doctors at a New Orleans hospital are now performing multiple surgeries on Gordon, who lives in nearby Hammond, as they work to repair her pelvis and stop the internal bleeding, her family said. The state police are investigating, and Esponge has been placed on administrative leave, WVUE-TV reported.

“I just can’t see how he could not see them laying there,” Gordon’s mother, Suzanne Baggett, told the TV station. Baggett said the truck dragged her daughter and the cooler she brought with her to the beach for several feet.

Esponge declined a request for comment, citing the ongoing investigation. A representative for the Grand Isle Police Department referred the Daily News to the Grand Isle City Attorney’s office, where calls for comment were not answered.

Louisiana State Police spokesman Sgt. Nick Manale told the Times-Picayune that investigators probing the incident don’t suspect Esponge of impaired driving. State police will lead the investigation and discuss the case with the Jefferson Parish District Attorney’s office to decide whether to file charges against Esponge.

This story shows what can happen when a beach patrol officer is driving distracted.  A tragedy like this can happen right here in Ludington with our own beach patrol who have ran the lengths of the beaches with their ATVs in non-emergency conditions patrolling (aka looking for firm tan bodies).

I'm sure this happens more than we know. Imagine if Ludingtons beach cleaner ran over sunbathers. What a mess that would be.

The city would charge the families for cleaning up the mess.
