Walhalla is competing against municipalities across the nation for money to put into the local economy.  Reader's Digest recently ran a contest that concluded early last month in which individuals cheered for their town.  The small town of Grand Marais, MIchigan beat out all other towns in the USA to win the prize then, which amounted to $40,000.  This time there is a bigger pot.

The Ludington Daily News ran two news stories concerning the first round of this contest, and encouraged its readers to vote for Ludington.  Ludington got some support, and finished in the top 100, but without a clear vision, they failed to get much traction.

You might think that a web blog named the Ludington Torch might advise the readers to vote for the City that it is named for, but we have documented quite a lot of misuse of funds and power by our own City government (who would receive and allot the money), that we cannot endorse this great City for that reason.  Instead, the Torch's Board of Directors have decided to throw our support behind the rural community of Walhalla, situated in the eastern half of Mason County.

No one here I know of lives in Walhalla and I personally only have chance acquaintances with Walhallans, but most of us may pass this small town when travelling on U.S. 10 and it sure looks like a little money couldn't hurt.  Our stated goal is to help this small community earn some money, and to make Walhalla the top vote-getter in Mason County.

To cheer, visit the website and put in Walhalla's zip code 49458 in the proper place.  You can cheer up to ten times a day:   We Hear You America- Reader's Digest

As of right now we are in 1150th place with ten votes.

By all means, vote for Ludington if you want more gold-plated signs (that are hard to read) made by a certain company.

As I have stated in round 1 of this contest, Ludington is a great place and I love all the natural resources it possesses-- that's why I live here.  But I also pointed out how the governance of this town has dropped the ball.

Any money that gets sent to Ludington, if they were to win some, would be likely put into pay raises or lost in raised administration fees, IMHO.  Review the aimless platitudes they led with in round one, if you will.  It would be kind of like giving foreign aid to corrupt dictators...

In the meantime, don't dis my brethren and sistren in Walhalla.  They're rugged folks.

Hey I just voted again and we are #96 with 1244 votes. It really took off.

#96!?  1244 votes!?  Awesome, we have the big mo-mentum.

Be sure and don't forget you are allowed to vote up to 10 times a day, and tell your friends about our efforts for Walhalla on Facebook, Twitter, etc.  If we can get Tallman, Branch, Fountain and Custer to help in a big way, maybe they can share in the winnings as well.

And the 2 residents of Walhalla thank you.
Actually as Tallman is a part of Walhalla there are some old buildings and vacant areas that need cleanup; and even people(many low income or elderly) who could use the help to get there property cleaned up. In its heyday it was such a vibrant resort area.

This is why people should back a small town with a small tax base when they cheer in this contest, because the money would be a pittance for any town with sizable population, and would get lost in the budget.  Here the community could divide the money around and do projects such as clean up or improve problem areas.  Grand Marais won the initial contest due to an organized push, and emphasizing a waterway project that really needed to be done and cost about the same amount to accomplish as the 1st place prize money.  And little ability for the community to do so.

One reason my small brain trust (not small-brain trust) decided on Walhalla is that we decided Custer and Scottville already charge enough in property taxes to easily do community projects; Ludington is wasting money on a large scale and continuously raising taxes and fees; Fountain and Freesoil had its advocacy-- but Walhalla won out because of its beautiful lakes and forests, not to mention its cool name and lack of representation on the Torch.  I would hate to play favorites.

I think this is a wonderful idea,I spent a good part of my summers playing in Tallman.
I always associated Walhalla with Valhalla, the heaven Vikings go to, since I'm 1/2 Norweigan, Valhalla it is. GO!

As a kid I always associated it with that Nordic paradise as well.  I don't see too many Valkyries hanging around the main drag, though when I pedal all the way out there I thometimes feel Mighty Thor.

It's kind of pathetic when someone has the time and hostility to attack another person mercilessly on a website that is only holding a contest, but that is what one of 'our friends' are doing.  I want everyone to pray for the salvation of the poor soul who engages in advanced cyberstalking like the person who has been defaming me over at that site.  http://wehearyouamerica.readersdigest.com/town.jsp?town=WALHALLA&am...

Wow, that is some f*d up caca there.  I mean I can see coming here to argue ones case on a thread where a person disagree's with the topic but going out of there way to follow you around the web is getting very creepy!

I mean if it was my teenager that another was following around like that it would be getting reported to the LE for cyberstalking.

And the even worse thing if not just downright pathetic is that they say a bunch of very bizarre things that don't even make sense, they aren't stating a premise and then backing it up with info, they are just making meaningless accusations about nothing. C.r.E.e.P.y

and another thing. It is pretty disgraceful that they would go and spam the 'digest' website with the non-sensical garbage.  I mean that is very disrespectful the RD and the contest.

I guess now you have put yourself out there to be scrutined like others in elected/appointed positions as well, but if a person is going to do so they could at least keep it so they are not spamming other peoples sites, as if RD cares about a persons personal vendetta against you. What an ugly person.

I guess all one can do is pray for there soul because right now whoever it is needs a boatload of karma.
