The Friday before Ludington Councilor Angela Serna received a very public reprimand for her social media posts (see related story), another more prominent Michigander woman was having her title stripped from her for doing the same.

Kathy Zhu, a well-known political commentator and online figure, amassing approximately 80,000 followers in her Instagram and Twitter accounts combined, was dismissed on July 18th as a Miss World America pageant participant when the organization described the content of her social media as "offensive, insensitive and inappropriate." according to a letter from the pageant that she posted on her Twitter account.

The first incident the pageant organization admitted was at issue (because they, unlike Ludington's mayor, decided to actually provide an example) was a comment she made regarding a hijab event at her college, as you can see it's about a year and a half ago:

Most of us who actually believe in the rights of women and how they are squelched under Shariah law would consider this a sensible stance, but apparently Miss World America pageant officials take offense at it for some reason they will not explain. These are the same people who would call you an insensitive bigot targeting Muslims if you ran a "try a yarmulke on" booth in Dearborn.

"I said that it was (getting women used to) being oppressed because there are so many women in Middle Eastern countries that are being punished and stoned for refusing to wear a hijab," said Zhu. "Nobody is talking about that in the West because all they see is everyone being at peace, but that is the beauty of America."

The second post of Zhu's under attack dealt with a stat she threw out when debating another person on Twitter. "Did you know the majority of black deaths are caused by other blacks? Fix problems within your own community before blaming others."

Third rail in today's political climate? Perhaps, but according to a US News & WR 2016 article on race and crime, in 2015, 89.3% of black people killed in America were killed by other black people, it was the first year in the 21st century where that number dipped below 90%. By ethnicity, whites outnumber blacks over five to one, but the number of murders in each group are about the same every year. That's significant.

"This applies for every community," Zhu said. "If there is a problem, fix things in your own community before lashing out at others and trying to find an issue there. That is all I wanted to say. It is not a problem against black people. Obviously I am not racist or stuff like that."

Kathy Zhu would appreciate the pageant officials actually explaining how her remarks were 'insensitive' or 'inappropriate' and has since said that it is currently easier in America to come out as being gay rather than come out as being conservative. It seems ridiculous for pageant officials to make the logical jump of calling her bereft of good character when they don't even offer her the ability to defend her posts.

Her plight did not go unnoticed, the reelection campaign for Donald Trump for 2020 has welcomed her on board one week later, calling her a "patriot who has continued to stand for American values despite being stripped of her crown." One door closes, another one opens.

I look forward to seeing her, and our own outspoken Councilor Angela Serna, out campaigning for a more sensible, accountable, and inobtrusive government in 2020 and counterattacking the prevailing censorial orthodoxy that prohibits our inalienable right to speak freely about issues.
