Residents of Mason County Eastern made the sleazy decision to raise the taxes of their part time neighbors and did not raise their own taxes to pay for the services they use on a daily basis. Dipping into non homestead residents pockets to rob them so they themselves would not have to pay their fair share. This has always been a pet peave of mine. What a bunch of cowards.

With over 80% of the Custer residents voting to raise the taxes for the non-homesteaders, most who do not reside (hence vote) there, we see that self-interest trumps fairness.

Do not believe that MCC, Ludington or any other local city's residents wouldn't do the same thing if given the chance.

And an overwhelming vote it was too, 123-30 in favor. Dirty stunts like this just go to show how low the school system will stoop to get funding, and with no shame.

Good point

You make a good point I had not considered. The school system intentionally put the vote on the ballot knowing full well it is a devisive issue. The school system doesn't care that this issue pits citizen againts citizen. They knew full well that if this ballot proposal was about raising the homesteader taxes it would not pass.

I went to a MCE school board meeting a few months back and one guy on the board was talking to someone else after the meeting in a *wink/hint* fashion about hopefully she would get picked to take a vacant seat because of a mid-term resignation(do to the resignee's job taking to much time I think). It is so 'cliqu-ey' to be a part of those things it really po's me. A truely qualified person who has good intent would lose out due to a popularity contest. Of course what 'board/council' isn't like that.
Actually I lost track of the dates. Did not see anything about election day until 10 PM news. Then today I learned taxes go up. Hubby usually gets an absentee ballot notice and got nothing for the first time ever. (Sheridan township)

We were supposed too vote on something? Just can't bring myself to buy the LDN subscription to learn these things.

I would've made it 124 though.

If people can afford to have a second home(usually on high value property in the woods or by water) up here they can afford an extra 10 dollars a year.

I suggest you pay your own taxes and stop relying on others to pay the bills for you. These "people" contribute a lot to the area but use very little of the resources and you and others think it's OK to keep sticking it to them because they have taken their earnings and invested it in Mason County. If anything, their taxes should be lowered because they get very little use out of the benefits that local taxes provide. If they can afford more taxes then so can you. Here's an idea. How about the Gov. living on what they have instead of continuously  going back to the trough.

Nah, I'll let the big wig city slickers pay our taxes, if they don't like it then let them move up here and live here like the rest of us and take the income hit that we do for being a part of this community. They could take their kids out of the private schools, downsize to a regular home and stay here year round.

If people can afford that then a couple extra mils won't hurt them.

Property like that should be in public trust for all of us, not just people who have a ton of money, it's not fair that no mater what job I have or how hard I work I will never ever be able to buy that type of land.
Actually I guess you have that backwards, they contribute very little to our community (because they are rarely here) yet use all the resources.
