Newaygo Deputy-to-be Accidentally Shoots Himself After Doing Shots

A former City of Newaygo police officer gets hired by the County of Newaygo as a Sheriff's deputy.  One week later, while off duty and just before 4:00 in the morning, he shoots himself in the knee in Muskegon County.  He was drunk at the time, and is being prosecuted for the misdemeanor of discharging a firearm while drunk.  No other details have been released at this time by his brothers in blue as to why he was drunk on a Thursday night wielding a firearm in a house (not his) outside of his bailiwick.  Such information is routinely given out for those who aren't members of a police force.  Wisely, the Newaygo sheriff promptly releases the new deputy from his employment before he shoots somebody else accidentally.

MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI - A former police officer will face a criminal charge after he shot himself in the knee at a home in Norton Shores early Thursday.

Andrew Mulder, 26, is being charged with discharging a firearm while intoxicated, said Muskegon County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Timothy Maat. His blood alcohol level was above 0.08, Maat said.

A warrant has been signed, and Mulder likely will be assigned a time to show up for arraignment, Maat said.

Mulder had accepted a part-time job as a deputy with the Newaygo County Sheriff's Office on Feb. 1, but had never served on active duty, said Newaygo County Undersheriff Chad E. Palmiter. Since that time, the sheriff learned of the accusation against Mulder and he is no longer employed with the department, Palmiter said.

Mulder also worked as a part-time officer with the Newaygo Police Department, according to Newaygo Police Chief Georgia Andres. He resigned to take the position with the sheriff's department, Andres said.

Mulder accidentally shot himself in his left knee around 3:52 a.m. Feb. 9, in a home in the 4100 block of Henry Street in the city of Norton Shores, Maat said.

The misdemeanor charge carries a maximum penalty of 93 days in jail and/or a $500 fine.
