The last three months, I've been working with family and friends on the annual Relay for Life. This is my first year working as a team member, though the last couple of years I and many members of my family have participated. My older sister died of breast cancer in 2008, and our team was formed in her remembrance.
I had a fun time, and enjoyed the local businesses help in allowing me and others to place our banks and footprints on their counters and run bake sales and other promotions for the cause. Thanks also needs to go out to those individuals and businesses that gave generously to our team. That includes the generous assist by the founder of this site in money, support, and time. May he get all three back with interest this fall.
Please come to Oriole Field this Saturday at noon. It will continue up through Sunday morning, raising money to fight cancer. Here's the official word:
Relay for Life is a 22-hour walk to raise awareness for cancer and to honor those who have survived the disease. Pledges are taken and participants walk the track around Oriole Field starting at noon on Saturday and throughout the night. Luminaries are lit and placed around the oval.
In 2010, teams and sponsors raised over $74,000 toward the fight against cancer. And the need is even greater than ever to raise more money in 2011. In Mason County alone, the Road to Recovery program was started to get patients the much needed transportation for cancer treatment. To date, this program has logged over 26,000 patient miles. In addition, $15.4 million in research grants is currently at work in Michigan, with $1.4 million at the Van Andel Institute of Grand Rapids.
If you or a loved one have dealt with cancer, Relay for Life is a way to fight back, and your help is needed. Participate by walking, or give monetarily. The American Cancer Society is dedicated to early detection and education, to helping people get well through services and programs, and to continuing the search for a cure.
