$19K 1 block sidewalk in Custer by Carr Creek Constr.

So I heard through the grapevine that the third block down on main st south will be getting a 19K dollar sidewalk installed by Carr Creek Contr.

 

This sidewalk will cover the area that starts at the little t-ball field and runs south across an alley and then in front of a warehouse owned by Sanders and ends at the next street.

 

I wonder if there were any competetive bids on this project and if CC has become licensed yet?

 

Seems I will be going to the next village meeting to find out more about why my tax dollars are supporting a sidewalk on a rarely used block YET when my yard is flooding due to the way the streets were rebuilt the village tells me to go ahead and do whatever I want with and to even tap into the storm sewer myself  as long as I pay for it myself.

the grapevine can't remember the exact things said but that the CC bid was the one that was 5K more but then someone said that they did the other towns Lud. & SCTVL so then they were approved. I need to find out if that is accurate or backwards.

I should say the CC bid MAY have been the one that was 5k more.

 

What I don't understand is why contractors here around the more local area were not contacted for bids, there are plenty of people within a radius of the village that can do this type of work I would think.

Dagny on the spot these days, another good find. I do hope that Carr Creek has updated their licensing and insurance, that Custer CC should definitely address that before their decision becomes binding. Sounds like a weak area to be building a new sidewalk, but, I haven't seen it recently. Come to think of it, I haven't seen anyone in Ludington building any sidewalks EXCEPT Carr Creek in the last 10 years or so. Hmmm, does that ring of favoritism, nepotism, or what other possible impropriety? This would also make a very good article to investigate now imho.

Dagnab it Dagny, that sounds like there's a story there.  Have you got enough quality information to say what is to be covered by the sidewalk, or how long it goes?  Can you maybe put up a map of the village of Custer and show the area to be sidewalked?  Try to get confirmation of the grapevine news, and maybe even consider contacting Mr. West from that other thread-- he may be able to supply some answers quick.

All I am going on about tonight is what someone told me was said at the meeting earlier tonight

Well, I went for a walk and it is in need of a sidewalk, SORT OF.

 

Here is my issue(aside from what I hear about what was said at the VC(village council) meeting)

A while back there was a sidewalk put in on main st south of the railroad tracks, IT runs the block that goes up the hill on the EAST SIDE to the next street(High St I think) this was good because prior to the sidewalk the kids going to school or people walking had to walk in the road on a hill where cars would be coming from behind. Then the sidewalk continues on to first st..

 

BUT the sidewalk they want to put in NEXT will be on the WEST side of the street. This means the kids in particular who walk that way for school will have to cross the street right at the railroad tracks(where the sidewalk in front of sanders meats ends on the WEST side) and then cross over to the EAST SIDE to get to the sidewalk going up the hill.

 

If they were to cross on the street where the new sidewalk will end they would still be walking in the street for a hundred or two hundred feet before getting to the sidewalk on the East Side.

 

Now the thing about the main street is that it is REALLY wide from the school down to the railroad tracks, so the kids would be better off staying on the EAST SIDE the ENTIRE way down rather than crossing at the bottom of a hill along railroad tracks in front of a busy business and where there are cars coming over the hill and people pulling in and out of the biz.

 

I am going to call around to the councilors tomorrow and ask why they are not putting in sidewalk all the way down on the EAST side where the kids and adults have a natural affectation to walk at anyway(for whatever reason that's where people gravitate when walking on that street).

 

It seems the school or Village would be obligated to have a crossing guard down there at some point in the route if this is the way they want the sidewalks to run.

 

I don't think this sidewalk has anything to do with the kids walking to school but is someone idea for there own interest. Why else would they have it switch sides like that.

 

the only actual crossing pint is right in front of the school on 3rd/main where they have thick white lines painted on the street.

 

Another thing I did not mention was that the state came through and raised the speed limit through town to 50 mhp from 40 mph. It is unbelievable how difficult it is now to pull out along the area throuhg the village, it makes no sense why anyone would raise it. Perhaps state data says otherwise but reality says it is not a good thing, especially now with school back in and all the buses and people pulling out right there on the three streets leading to the highway.

I thought they raised the speed limit through Custer when I went through there this summer.  The hills on US 10and the school and Custer(?) Road intersection make me agree with you on lower speeds.  Can't your town control the speed issues?

I really don't know, I think it is state highway though as they had those 'strips' that measure traffic or whatever across the highway last spring/early summer roughly. And county plows it (as State HWY contract), not Village plows out there
