I think the new sheriff is playing politics. I read in the LDN that, OMG, there's mold in the jail. I know we've talked about this before but now the Sheriff's got the newspaper involved. He's definitely trying to drum up support for his need to have the County fork over tax dollars to clean up the jail. I don't think the Sheriff realizes that mold has been around for a billion years and that it's one of the easiest creations of nature to control. Mr. Sheriff, do some housecleaning once in a while and your mold problems will go away and if it comes back, do a some more cleaning and add a dehumidifier. I can see that the new Sheriff will have no remorse at spending as much of our money as he can get a hold of.

Mary already explained about the union there it's only for contract negotions. I believe you are fantasizing about how unions actually are if she says the union only does that there then why keep saying that the union is all powerful there? Why spread un trues on here unless you have a need for it

Thanks Chuck

What makes you think the employees didn't suggest those things?  How do you know if they did or didn't. Again, if things don't get approved for the money to be spent. To doesn't get spent. The employees can't just do things and go spend money when they feel like it. There is a budget and the employees are not in charge of those budgets. Do you have a budget that you can only spend so much in a week or in two weeks? Or you run out of money right? And what does the Union have to do with getting the mold taken care of? Wow Really?

"during that period of incarceration" you make it sound like you did hard time... you must be very familiar with the "ways" of the common criminal then. You must have established yourself as a "pod god' and kept the remote and dominated the TV....right?

It helps my "street cred", Sam, LOL.

Incarceration is an accurate term to use for being held in any place.  Just as a jailor is an accurate term for a CO.  I went to my punishment willingly-- I was making $35 a day, and I wasn't in the general population.  I had no TV, me basically staying all but a couple of hours in my cell, which was effectively used as a 'drunk tank' for non-criminal jail population.  I had a toilet and a little packet of toiletries, a pen, and a couple sheets of paper, wish I had had more.

I considered myself a political prisoner; still do.

For all of you, complaining and blaming our current Sheriff for the Mold. He is the one who is getting the problem fixed. After this has been investagated from professionals, the problem has been developing over at least a yr. HUMMM.  The Showers have been leaking and the basement flooded and was never repaired. What is cleaning the walls have to do with cleaning the mold or preventing the mold. I guess you ppl don't know anything about what is going on in the building unless you are there and understand the situation.  Clean the walls??? REALLY SERIOULY??????  The whole building has been checked out. NOT BY ANY OF YOU.. But by professionals.. I'm sure they know more then any of you reading this.  Cells have been shut down, the basement has been shut down. Inmates have been shipped out,. because of no room in the jail because of the cells being shut down. It sounds like to me Sheriff Cole is preventing more problems not trying to cause any. He made it public because he felt the public had a right to know. NOT to keep anything hidden from them or a secret.  Maybe you ppl should investagate Sever Cases of Black Mold and hope to take care of it and tell me where it says. Take 10mins and clean the walls.  Read on how to take care of it the proper way the healthy way.. to help over 100 peoples health for also in the future.

I am more concerned that whoever built the building put the building into use did not institute a plan of standard upkeep and maintenance with the county board to make sure these things did not become and issue in the first place. Cole, fiers, whoever, they should have a book they look in that says what needs to be done each day/week/month/year etc... to keep a commercial building in proper working order and not falling apart. This is not some old building(most of it anyway), much of the building is like what? 15 years old?

I blame the county board for not having a standard of care for the building laid out from day one when it went into operation...and a budget set for upkeep and maintenance each year. This building is not owned by whoever is sheriff it is owned by the county and the board that handles county buildings should have these issues reported to them and then a plan of action for taking care of such things.

AND thank god those ghetto hood rat gang banger state MDOC so called *people* are not in our county jail anymore.

I know someone who had to sit with those %!&&#^$ in N1 many years ago and they thought they were the king turds of the crap pile. They are a danger to our local people.

Jane, who do you think go to jail? The "those %!&&#^$" and "ghetto hood rat gang banger" are in all jails that is where everyone goes first, don't you watch the very fine cable show, "JAILS"? And,"They are a danger to our local people."Again did these local people win a lotto so they could enjoy their time away from home in a spa-like get-a-way? WOW! are you out of touch! Jail is where everyone goes between arrest and sentencing just like it says in the shows intro. I'm thinking that most of you think that most that are in jail must have gone there by choice.... And you never answered Marys question about you going to jail and finding out for yourself...I do applaud your comment that the county board has let this building go to waste but the previous elected officials should have stepped up and said some thing like Sheriff Cole has..but that in your eyes just make him a whiner and crier I guess I'm not seeing why you all see it that way. I believe that during the election campaign Cole was called a "liar" about the leaks and other things and most all have been brought to the attention of the public and Sheriff Cole didn't lie about any of it he spoke the truth and the other guy told the fibs to cover things up... that I don't understand either.

I don't think I ever said anything about Cole. It is the county board that is responsible for building and properties maintenance, which should also be part of each employees responsibility as well per a procedure manual created and designed by the county board or a subsection of them assigned to create a manual. Do you think sheriffs deputies and CO's are better than someone who works at any other local business like the gas station or fast food restaurant and should not have to clean. Well, Mary says they do clean, so then why is there mold or leaky shower heads. Doesn't anybody in the last ten years know how to go to Lowes and buy some light bulbs or teflon tape and a new shower head? That part is an old problem that should have been handled ages ago, long before Cole was even there, so was it Fiers responsibility and now Coles, or should some lower on the totem pole person have handled that per the procedures manual. WHO is supposed to handle these things. Seems a bit trivial the actual sheriff has to even be involved other than approving a work order for someone to go buy the stuff(read a request then scribble a signature) at Lowes/Home Depot/Briggs then having a trustee or other employee screw them onto their respective threaded space. Cole and Fiers are irrelevant it is procedures that make an organization or business run smoothly and without those it don't matter who is the sheriff.

No Detroit gangbangers don't need to end up in OUR 'jail' before going to the state *prisons* or as an income racket for our county when the *prisons* run out of beds. We have criminals here but not the likes of those people from the state prison system, if those here were that level of criminal they would be in a state prison and not a county jail.

I know what the CO's do with those so called humans that come from the state prisons, they allow them to intermingle with our local jail population. They let all the black DOC's take over the whole of N1 and take the first floor and be so despicable be to our locals that they can't talk on the phone without them yelling DAY-O over and over really loud or harassing our local people because they are pissed they are here and not in a state pen.  T'he whites and mexicans and had to hide out upstairs to be safe from the DOC guys. They let them stay up ll night playing cards being LOUD. . The DOC's try to bully for commissary(try all the time). Keep the TV all day. The CO's are afraid of those people or they would make them act like the local prisoners, who may be there because of a crime but not because they are murderers or they would be a MDOC prisoner and not a county jail resident. The locals in jail can repeatedly ask for help dealing with them and be ignored by the CO's.

Who said the C/O's were scared of the MDOC inmates? If there were or are they shouldn't be doing the job they are doing. And I'm real sure there is not a Officer there who has left yet because of them. So Jane wherenur info is coming from is wrong. And again you want to point fi gets about being scared of inmates. Go spend ONE just one day there go into a cell of 20 inmates alone and try to solve a problem... ALONE. Remember Jane these ppl are human yes but keep in mind they are also Criminals. Yes Jane Crimanls..There isn't a Officer there scared to do that. Are you?

Amen Mary! I think this problem goes back farther than some are willing to blame, Thank you Mary for this insight it gets easy to blame the current in charge this has probably been going on since it was first opened and that should be addressed from the one(s) that first built it

I guess I'm having a hard time following Sam and Mary and Chuck when they say that our purpose here at the Torch is blaming Kim Cole for the mold.  I am aware of nobody ever blaming him for it, just wondering about his motives.  Let us not forget he was trying to get a costly duct cleaning approved by the County, which had many skeptical.  What better way to sell the need than engage in theatrics like shutting down parts of the jail without displaying the reasons why.

While he is withholding any of those black mold findings from the public, he also withholds several FOIA requests I have had going since 2012.  In his defense, he wasn't the sheriff candidate that was stressing accountability, openness, and living by the Constitution.
