Yesterday afternoon, Laura McClellan brought a bit of news to the public's attention in a social media post on Facebook, that has yet to be unrefuted by the local newspaper, known affectionately/disgustedly here as the City of Ludington Daily News (COLDNews).  In an emotional post she stated:

She added some details:

Drivers, carriers, and those who knew both commented on her post or elsewhere talking about how the COLDNews handled this conversion to USPS by axing their employees without telling them the news until the last minute:

And sure enough, in this weekend's newspaper the COLDNews let us in on their new direction, just in case the employees they just canned wanted to read more on the last day of work for most of them.

Everybody knows the way you treat the many diligent, long-term workers you appreciate is to let them go at a moments notice.  Nothing says appreciation like wondering where you'll find a replacement job at the end of summer so that you don't default on your house payment.  This newspaper business is so COLD that they even ran these ads in yesterday's paper, saying they need drivers and carriers-- when they just informed the public and those very carriers and drivers that they will not be needed anymore.

Nowhere in their article is there any indication of how this move will specifically improve your service, so let others know in the following days if it either improves or gets worse.  Please, respectfully if you can, let these jackbooted thugs know how you feel about their latest move, the drivers they ran over, the newsboys and newsgirls who were thrown under the bus.

You might want to leave a review on their Facebook site, or send them a letter via their e-mail:   ldn@ludingtondailynews.com.

Maybe if they actually had a backbone and reported the TRUE news this would not be happening! NEVER challenge anything the city does. They just need to close, a waste of everyone's time! Bunch of silly cronies that harm concerned and support bullies!

Print journalism has a very difficult time in this day and age, and I would hope that the COLDNews could undergo a transformation back to relevancy by being able to be more than just a bulletin board and propaganda tool for our officials, their advertisers, and other partisan interests.

Being an independent, fair, and critical periodical, however, is often seen as being a business model that costs a bit more, since you lose access to officials, you lose advertisers, and you still get panned from either side of the extreme political spectrum for their perceptions that you are a shill for the other side.  Likewise, the new talent coming from the universities and other markets tend to push the journalism a lot more left than the right-center general readership is comfortable with.  This is in my honest opinion why we cannot seem to break from the current COLDNews back to the readable LDN that I grew up with.

I don't believe getting the news paper delivered by the postal service is a new thing. Back when I was a kid 60 years ago , my parents got the paper delivered by the mail man. Always a day late. I thought then it was dumb.

Just a start of what's to come. The print newspaper business is a dinosaur. Home delivery of a printed publication will soon become a thing of the past. This has been seen already in many communities. Eventually, the Ludington Daily News will become completely an online publication, much like Mason County Press.

Yeah I get it, tbh wouldn't mind seeing the rag fold! Living near a big mall where its staple store that helped build it slowly close is hard to watch. All I can say is at least the workers had some notice at my local Sears. Not giving any is not cool and in horrible taste! Shame LDN!

Remember the COLDNews massacre at the very end of 2011, where the newspaper released three seasoned employees without notice shortly after the paper was sold to a media conglomerate?

Why are those who work at the COLDNews always the last to get the news that they're fired?  Like then, the bean counters and managers knew what was going on, but didn't share it with their peers.  Exactly how they operate with our local city hall and their corruption-- they know what graft is going on, but don't share it with the people.

I'm quite surprised the LDN has much reliable and efficient staff left there nowadays. The way the locals are profiled, COL leaders praised and adored, tourist related projects promoted, while infrastructure crumbles, and the way employees are treated for years on end, doesn't bespeak of a worthy business in town. Sad and sorry for the LDN carriers & families, they certainly deserve better than this. And all this happens on a Saturday, instead of a regular business weekday, M-F, shameful.
