Aldon Maleckas' Tuesday March 20, 2018 "My Turn" editorial in the City of Ludington Daily News (COLDNews) opinion page shows once again that he just may be the second wisest man in Mason County.  He writes nearly one week after a nationally organized walkout against gun violence (and for strict gun control) had several area high schoolers being shuttled by school administrators into safe-spaces within the school to show... something or other.   Indoctrination, maybe.

The general consensus of protesters seemed to be that guns were an evil that needed to be controlled for their safety.  Most would say that regular law-abiding folks having guns, other than rifles used for hunting perhaps, was a bad thing; when pressed by asking how about that bad guy coming to the school with a gun, they would inevitably answer that they would rely for their safety on the local police responding.  That isn't much different of a response than the grownups who organized these walkouts.

Rational people fear a world where only criminals and police are the sole possessors of firepower, for then they will surely get caught in the crossfire from either emboldened bad guys or emboldened good guys.  I am not a gun guy; Aldon Maleckas doesn't strike me as somebody who regularly fires or collects guns.  But even so, we are adamant about two things.

Everybody needs to be able to protect themselves and their loved ones when the need arises.  Even the best police force cannot be relied upon to provide that protection.  I will let Aldon explain some of the history and the concepts:

Thanks for that refreshing essay of common sense, Mr. Maleckas.  But there are other viewpoints, so if you believe otherwise on any of his points, please share your rationale as to why Aldon's thesis is off.  Or leave him a comment appreciating his viewpoint and/or his moxie in getting it published in the COLDNews.

Tomorrow, there will be another 'national' protest on gun violence/safety/control that will be centered in Washington DC but will find itself in smaller demonstrations being held all over.  Locally, it will be held at the Mason County Courthouse.  Partners in this effort are the same characters from the school walkout (aka chaperoned school shut-in for local high school kids).

The meme heading this article once again is applicable.  Ironically, these indoctrinated kids and misguided adults will assemble at the very place where basic civil rights of individuals guaranteed by the Constitution and its amendments are supposed to be affirmed, not denied.  I fully support their First Amendment right to assemble and advocate for their own beliefs, I don't support at all that among those beliefs are their denial of the Second Amendment rights of others (with the exception of the state's police agents who will undoubtedly be armed and with them for their safety).  It's a sad commentary that our spineless local media and limp-wristed government officials will feel a need to support both.

I like the poster at the top of your discussion. Good for Alden. He makes some common sense statements.

When the courthouse was being built it wouldn't have seemed possible for anyone to imagine that there would some day be people protesting against the 2nd amendment and supporting gun control at the Court house.

In case you missed it, Aldon Maleckas also posted a cogent article in an MCP article on March 22 on the same issue that's very readable because it makes a lot of sense.  The Ludington Torch, as always, encourages those with differing views to express them if they see logical fallacies in such dissertations:

Dear Editor:
I have noticed the response to the Parkland shooting and have read David Petersen’s letter to the editor. Students are having a march for school safety and some are leaving class to demonstrate. I would ask these students to consider:

Opioids kill an estimated 42,000 people a year. How many of their student friends are using or have been killed by opioids? I do not see students demonstrating for tougher regulations on opioids.
Car accidents kill 40,000 people a year. Most of those deaths are caused by young drivers. Maybe we should raise the driving age to 21 and see how school students appreciate it. I do not see any student marches to increase the driving age or for stricter regulations.
Bombs have killed many people. I have not seen any student demonstration for tougher regulation on bombs.
Bridges have collapsed and killed people. I have not seen any student demonstrations for tougher regulations on bridges.
Fires kill students and other people. I have not seen any student demonstrations for tougher regulations on fires.
Trucks kill people by driving into crowds. I have not seen any student demonstrations for tougher regulation on trucks.

The list goes on and on. We should do a data search and determine how many shootings have been in gun free zones as opposed to areas where guns are allowed; such as, compare the shootings in schools versus shootings in police stations. You will find that gun free zones are an invitation to disaster. We need to have proper priorities. Our United States’ constitution provides that we can keep and bear arms; we do this to protect against an oppressive government and for our own personal protection. So why all these demonstrations for tougher gun laws and more restrictions. Students need to realize that our nation has allowed conditions that make people do bizarre things now and will make them do the same in the future. Our initial actions have been to barricade classrooms, to hide, and/or to flee the area. All this is known to the attacker. You need to acquire the knowledge to assess a threat and take action to neutralize that threat (shooter or whatever). Learn how not to be a victim.
Aldon Maleckas, Custer

Well said Mr. Maleckas. Thanks for posting this X.

Another good read from local talent is MCP's letter from David Petersen.  If it were not for these local pedants offering their wisdom via letters to the editor, locals would have to endure a very slanted coverage of these 'gun violence protests'.

Case in point, if you read today's COLDNews, you would have seen the main article on the front page "Locals support D.C. March:  Educators, veterans, more rally for March for our lives" (where about 40 grown-ups got together at the courthouse on Sunday-- kids weren't anywhere to be found since skipping school wasn't involved), then two other M4OL recaps from Detroit and Washington DC courtesy of the Associated Press graced the back page:  "Students Lead the Way in Marches Against Gun Violence" and "Vote them Out!  Hundreds of Thousands Demand Gun Control".

All three articles were as puerile and as one-sided as you would imagine.

Not even worthy

of the editorial page.

Paid Pol. announcement.

Check shin.

Which proves the point that the leftist brain is comparable to a spoiled teenager. It's difficult to tell who the adults are at one of these rallies. Very good letter from Mr. Peterson even tho I have to disagree with some of his opinions but at least he's putting ideas on the table.
