Disgusting! A Mom Injects Botox Into Her Child

I personally think the whole child pageant thing is disgusting but this story is just unbelievable. Why in gods name would the mom in the story every give her child botox? I think she mentioned that the child asked for the botox... I mean seriously, if that's the case if the kid asked for boobs, she gonna get the kid a set of those too? I believe the child has been removed from the home for the time being... I think mom needs some time to reassess things and a little time with her daughter around will hopefully get her to see the err in her ways.

San Francisco child protective services is investigating a mother who sparked international outrage this week after telling a national television audience that she had injected her 8-year-old daughter's face with Botox to make her more competitive in beauty pageants.

The Human Services Agency opened the investigation after callers flooded San Francisco's child abuse hot line after Kerry Campbell's appearance on Thursday's "Good Morning America" show, during which the San Francisco woman discussed giving the wrinkle remover to her daughter, Britney.

"There was a pretty big community response," said Trent Rhorer, director of human services. In addition to getting a lot of calls from concerned San Franciscans, he said he also heard from "Entertainment Tonight" and plenty of other news outlets.

According to published reports, Campbell lived in Birmingham, England, and recently moved to San Francisco. The Chronicle was not able to find a current telephone or address listing for her.

Online purchases

Campbell first talked publicly about using Botox on her child in the British newspaper the Sun in March. Photographs accompanying the story showed Campbell demonstrating how she injected the drug herself into Britney's forehead. She repeated the demonstration on "Good Morning America."

Campbell told the newspaper and the hosts of the television show that she is a trained esthetician and that she buys the Botox from an online source. She also said the use of Botox is becoming common in children's beauty pageants - something that pageant officials deny.

"I've never, ever heard of a child getting that. It's ridiculous," said Barbara Thomas, a director with California Gold Coast Pageants. She added that Britney has never participated in one of her organization's pageants.

"What would a child have need of Botox for? They don't have a wrinkle on their face," Thomas said. "That woman must be off her rocker."

That seems to be a popular opinion, both of child health experts and the masses of online bloggers, TV pundits and average parents who have condemned Campbell's actions.

Dermatologists and child psychology experts said Friday that injecting Botox into a child is clearly unhealthy and ill advised, for the child's physical as well as emotional well-being.

'It's disgusting,' doctor says

"Medically, who knows what this is going to do to a growing child, and then psychologically, oh my God. It's disgusting," said Dr. Laura Davies, a child psychiatrist at California Pacific Medical Center.

"The goal of parenthood is to love your kids like they're the best thing since sliced bread. It's not that complicated," Davies said. "The message she's sending is, 'You're not good enough.' She's prioritizing physical beauty, which is exactly what you don't want to do."

Botox is the brand name of a purified, diluted form of the botulinum toxin that can be used to paralyze and relax muscles, which can smooth wrinkles in the skin around them. It's approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for cosmetic use in adults 18 and older.

The drug can be used to treat some specific health problems in children, but it does not have FDA approval for cosmetic use in minors. Botox requires a prescription for anyone to get, and under California regulations it must be administered under doctor supervision.

Dr. Isaac Neuhaus, an assistant professor of dermatology with UCSF, said he worries about the mother buying Botox online, rather than directly from the manufacturer, because the drug may not be pure enough or of an acceptable concentration normally used for wrinkle removal.

Painful shot, side effects

Botox, when it's used incorrectly, can have side effects, including problems breathing and swallowing. Plus, it is often painful when it's injected. Photos published on TV and in the original newspaper story show Britney with ice packs around her face after getting the shots.

"Botox paralyzes the muscles of the forehead or whatever area it is, and by not moving muscles you don't create creases. But those creases are formed over 30 or 40 or 50 years," he said. "I'm not quite sure what the benefit is for an 8-year-old."

I saw this story the other day on some news program on TV.  I hope the poor girl doesn't suffer any bad effects in the long run, and I hope she gets effective counciling to let her know that what her mother did was wrong.  The mother must already have some issues-- I hope she also learns that what she did was wrong:  Using your kid as a guinea pig in some wacky experiment.
Just heard this on the radio too today Dave, good thread. If this isn't considered serious child abuse, I quit. The interview of the child I heard speak on the radio was really disheartening and shameful from the aspect that a mother could actually brain wash her daughter into letting her do it, and w/o any real good cause except greed.

I won't let the kid go in pageants, even though she's been begging me for years. They are acrazy  things considering that the little kids are allowed make-up, not a touch of lipstick but a pancake face of epic fail proportions. Those ppl are crazy with what they do to the kids and from the perspective of the people who participate in those pageants it probably is not any different than a horse show person putting weights on their horses hooves. For us outsiders it may seem crazy but we have to remember they live in a different world than we do and all things are a matter of perspective.

Right and wrong are all a matter of perspective(world view) look at the female circumcisions in Africa or wherever, to us its wrong but to them its the way things are done....

But this is USA so Botoxing kids is nuts, it can paralyze.

Shooting your kid up with botox is just plain stupid and dangerous. These mothers need to be evaluated by a shrink.
