All to often it happens that the first baby of the year born at the local hospital is not the product of a marital union. For many years it seems to be the same thing, single parents or no father involved. This year is no exception according to an LDN article. The article makes no mention of the father of the child. Why is this  supposed to be a good news story when the child begins it's life with an unwed mother and an absent father? How much money is this costing the taxpayers in medical benefits to the mother and baby and how much will it cost to feed and house the mother and child? I would like to see an article about the first baby born to a man and woman who are committed to their relationship and who married not because "she" was pregnant" but because they waited until they were emotionally and financially ready to marry and financially and emotionally ready to have a child.

Nationally, over 40% of all births occur out of wedlock, so you expect that two out of every five years, you will get a new year's baby without married parents.  This trend will likely continue to go up with the recent adjustments to marriage definitions, and a more secular society.  As government grows, the institution of marriage will be further disparaged, since strong family units tend to want smaller governments, and more liberty.

On a positive note West Michigan News 98 reports that the first baby born in Manistee had married parents (or at least the same last name):

I like your notice and take on this subject matter Willy. It goes without saying that this type of birth, back in the day, would not be published as a thing of beauty, nor something necessarily to be proud of. They would have skipped over to a marital couple's birth. Society has changed on this over the decades, and it's not for the better imho. The questions of costs and who's paying may sound petty to some, but I think it's of importance to note, as I'll bet it's costing all of us for this type of birth. Thanks for the Manistee posting too, these are proud parents to be praised for their union and ethical behavior.

Aquaman. Another huge problem is the number of illegals born in the U.S. who get a free ride for themselves and any relatives who want to tag along. It's estimated that 8% + of all births in the U.S. are babies of illegal aliens. Not only are they swamping the U.S. with babies they are bringing in diseases that have been historically been under control here and which they are now causing the spread of.

Thanks for those statistics X. If they're from Manistee and have the same name, they must be brother and sister. {just kidding}

That's bad Willy just plain bad.

Just released by the Ludington Silly News. The real first baby born at local hospital in 2016. Mother and baby are doing fine. Mother hopes someday to see her offspring grow up to be on the CIty Council. Doctors are hinting that the baby already is over qualified for the position but could be a good fit for the office of Mayor.
