The Mason County Sheriff's Department releases an inmate in nothing more than his boxer shorts in 19 degree temperature. The family brought clothes for their family member to wear upon exiting jail however the sheriff department refused them the right to give him clothes so he could properly leave the jail. How appalling and disgusting and disgraceful is this Mason County Sheriff Department under the direction of Kim cold?

There must be more to this story. When he was checked into the jail was he only wearing shorts?

Correct. He was on drugs and entered a home on Madison Ave in only his boxers. He was taken into custody in his boxers. Upon release family brought clothes for him to put on. The Jail Officers refused to let him wear any clothes other than what he was wearing when he was arrested. So, if he was nude,  would release him nude....? Most likely. The sheriff's dept wants to take in Heroin Addicts to Help them. If this is the kind of treatment they will receive then what is the point? The fact the Sheriff denies this occurs is incredibly false. There are many inhumane things that go on against inmates in Mason County jail. Most inmates won't talk about it as they fear retribution in their case and they just want to move on and escape such treatment.

Maybe the Sheriff would like to tell the Public why they tie the laundry bag knots so tight? I really think he should. Tell them how his deputies run the rope between their filthy ass cheeks and tie the rope real tight, so the inmate has to use their teeth to untie the knot. Don't be shocked and appalled now....

Yesterday at 9:14 AM Sheriff Coled did issue a statement on the MCSO Facebook page:

Recently a picture appeared on social media depicting an inmate being released from the Mason County Jail not prepared for the cold weather conditions.
The release of the inmate was planned and family was waiting outside for him. That said, we have a standard within this agency which I expect to be adhered to every minute of every day and I’m saddened to say, yesterday we did not meet that standard. The last sentence of our Mission Statement reads; “Doing what is right no matter the cost and protecting the dignity of those we serve.”
I have ordered an investigation into this matter and we are in the process of making changes to ensure this never happens again.
If you have any questions please feel free to stop in my office or call. My command staff or I would be willing to address any of your concerns you may have.
Kim C. Cole
Sheriff"

The incident happened the previous day and was posted the night before (January 30) by those who picked up the guy.   According to his mother:  "I attempted on many occasions to bring clothes for his release. I was told by the officers , "No. They leave as they come in." No clothes were accepted for his release."  The policy, if it exists, has to change.

Does anyone find it rather ODD that LDN and MCP have no report or story on this heinous matter?

I do not find it odd, I find it typical of those two organizations to avoid anything that might taint in any way any kind of local or state officials.  This has made it onto the Lake County Press, an independent media source on Facebook that normally reports Lake County news.  They have not completed the task by offering Sheriff Cole's public announcement that he's looking into it.

I believe that the weather report John notes is the conditions that were current at the time of the release of the man.

LDN Now reporting, "Inmate refused to get dressed and played with his dog outside."   VIDEO PLEASE!   And, why didn't the Sheriff report that?

The policy of releasing prisoners exactly the way they are processed may be a common procedure at other jails. I'm not approving of how Cole"s deputies handled this but If that prisoner had not been breaking the law and acting stupidly then he would not have been in jail and this would never have happened. What I resent is the fact that my tax dollars paid for this guy"s room and board while he was incarcerated for violating the law. His family was there to pick him up so I say to them, take a look at how your son/ father/ brother acted and focus your anger on the real problem.

The family publicly stated they have deep concerns for him and were immediately taking him to a treatment center. So, I believe the family has taken admiral responsibility to bring him clothes and prepare him  directly to a facility that can help him. Sure, he broke some laws and he did his jail time. The family and Public has every right to be appalled at his treatment upon release. Recently, the MSP and Sheriff's offices announced they were opening their doors to help out in the Opioid Crisis. I do not believe this shows Good Faith with their concerns and the way they go about helping.

Thanks John Doe for this thread. I understand why such a policy by MCSO might be usual and correct, at least maybe most of the time. However, in these particular circumstances of extreme winter weather, some leeway is only necessary and humane. Where was Cole, the under-sheriff, and the next high authority in line, like a Detective? Were they all gone? What about the releasing officers? Don't they have any common sense with some sense of dignity and humanity? This prisoner already lost his dignity and honor as it was, but to push it further to this extreme is quite inhumane and unfair in all respects. I did see Cole's response, which is okay, but too late imho. Some readers have offered to set up a closet with donated clothing for such instances, and I think that's a good idea. With the resources of about $3-4 Million of our tax dollars funding MCSO, this type of behavior is totally unacceptable right now. And the LDN & MCP are dual accomplices to such behavior. They simply can't report the news anymore with objectivity, it's all biased to fit the agenda of covering up for officials when they are out of line, shameful lack of reporting.
