Is this the correct timeline for the contamination of the Pere Marquette Bayou?

Madison Street was washed out and rebuilt after the 1986 flood.

Sometime after that Karboske from the marina had the mud tested, found out it was free of contaminants  and was allowed to dredge out the bottom material.

In 2008 Madison Street washed out again and again was repaired.

Sometime after that Karboske again had the mud tested, found out it was now toxic and was not allowed to dredge.

Is this the correct sequence of events?

No mention has been made that east of Madison was the former City of Ludington Dump that was operational into the '60's. This is immediately  upstream from the washout. This was before there was many if any restrictions on what kind of industrial wastes could be put in the dump. Face it, it was a dump not a landfill. Because of the COL culpability could it be that COL does not want to own up to its responsibility of Love Ludington Love Canal? The land the former dump sits on was subsequently  sold to Industrial Fiberglass of Scottville who built a plant that occupied  some of the former LLLC land. They went bankrupt sometime in the late 60's-early 70's. Currently Whitehall Industries sits on the property.

Interesting quote in the link " The Council Refuses to Allow Market in the Fourth Ward"

"Residents who oppose the market content they put up with the problems of having a city dump at the described location for many years..." "We put up with fires the city couldn't put out, smoke filled houses, rats and beetles."

Who know what kind of toxic stew is brewing beneath the top fill of the old City Dump. It would be interesting to find out if there is any toxic mud above this site.

Maybe the storm of 08 eroded the soil enough to cut into the former City Dump and washed out some of the toxic dump material. Who know unless there are proper tests done.

One other thing, where the hell is AFFEW?  You would think that an organization that calls itself  A Few Friends for the Environment and the World would be all over this. I guess it is easier to pick up a few cigarette butts and balloons along the beach and get you photo in the paper than it is to tackle something the could be a major environmental event.

Why doesn't someone call the AFFEW people or send them a letter asking if they know and care about it, then see what happens from there. If nothing, call their leader, then we will know how they feel. I am sure they and "Moonbeam" would discuss the matter, and maybe?

Good job of research shinblind. This may be a sore that's been festering for years of which local leaders have been aware of but have always swept it under the rug. This wouldn't be good for tourism in Ludington. I don't know about anyone else but I always enjoy a drink of fresh Ludington water when I'm thirsty. I can pour it into a cup in complete darkness.

It is time to pull up the rug and expose what has been swept under it! You, just like everyone else, deserve a government that is for all of its residents. Not just the wealthy residents/tourists which it seems our col government is made up of. Lets get everyone to register to vote!
