Only 'modern corporate journalists' would stage a 'mass editorial protest' to defend the 'fake news' they propagate.
Earlier this week it was announced that over 100 US newspapers would run editorials on Thursday August 16 rejecting President Trump's repeated attacks on the press. The move was orchestrated by the Boston Globe editorial board to denounce Trump's claim that the media is the "enemy of the people".
Over 300 newspapers eventually joined the effort to denounce "the war against the free press" and it suggested that editorial boards take a stand against Trump's words regardless of their politics. The Globe's own editorial published the results of a poll that showed 48 percent of Republican voters agreed with the statement: "The news media is the enemy of the American people," with 28 percent disagreeing.
What these corporate media elites are failing to qualify is that Trump has never berated dedicated journalists printing the undisputed truth in their publications as enemies of the people. Wikipedia acknowledges that On February 17, 2017, President Donald Trump first weighed in on Twitter:
"The FAKE NEWS media (failing @nytimes, @NBCNews, @ABC, @CBS, @CNN) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People!"
Trump repeated the assertion on February 24 at the Conservative Political Action Conference, saying "A few days ago I called the fake news the enemy of the people and they are. They are the enemy of the people." At a June 25, 2018 rally in South Carolina, Trump singled out journalists as "fake newsers" and again called them "the enemy of the people." On July 15, 2018 in Helsinki, Finland, Trump tweeted "The Summit with Russia was a great success, except with the real enemy of the people, the Fake News Media."
You will notice that Trump never calls anybody other than the "fake news" the enemy of the people, and while it is debatable whether he correctly dubs 'news organizations' and 'journalists' as "fake newsers", it's not debatable that honest-to-goodness 'fake news' is bad. Fake news is defined as a type of yellow journalism or propaganda that consists of deliberate misinformation or hoaxes spread via traditional print and broadcast news media or online social media.
Trump is saying each time in different permutations the truism that "Fake news is the enemy of the people"; the Boston Globe and about 300 other newspapers are trying to tell us that 'fake news is not our enemy' by spreading the fake proposition or implication that President Trump has stated that even honest journalism is the enemy of the people. These editorials with few exceptions are fake news on display, lying about the president saying something he hadn't.
The City of Ludington Daily News (COLDNews), the area's own corporate media, followed along with the silly and backward protest by having their own vapid editorial on August 16 by new editor David Bossick. He ends the piece with the "fake news" that launched 300 editorials: "Mr. President, when you tell the world the media is "an enemy of the American people", you've gone too far.
David, fake news journalists are an enemy of the people, and an enemy of honest journalists that do their diligence in order to report the objective truth. Next time, report what the president actually said, not what your fellow 'fake news' professionals have reported.
And our local newspaper thought the attack on the truth needed a couple of editorials just to show that they are firmly entrenched in "fake news" advocacy. Our readers should know this already just by reading what they do in the paper every other Tuesday, the day after Ludington council meetings, and then reading what we publish here-- along with a video of the meeting and supporting documentation for our 'editorial' outlooks.
The previous day the COLDNews wasted ink on an opinion piece by previous managing editor Steve Begnoche. Steve is no stranger to a fabrication if it will provide cover for the local government, advance his career, or advance his point. The latter is evident in his piece where, like editor Bossick, ignores any of the incidences of Fake News (here's several verified fake news articles by otherwise reputable groups within a month of Trump's inauguration), and ends with the same prevarication Bossick made.
But had this failed premise and the confused logic therein been the only thing in this column worthy of note, I wouldn't have shared it with you and made your day that much addled. I include it because Steve Begnoche, true to form, added his own 'fake news' to support his fake premise.
In the third column Begnoche mentions that in March 2016, he personally attended a rally in Cadillac, and states: "Trump berated the media. People jeered and booed the reporters and photographers in the 'pen', it was mostly a harmless exercise in crowd hysterics."
Remember a narrative made by Hillary Clinton where she claims that she got off a plane in Bosnia under heavy sniper fire, that was debunked by an annoying video unearthed showing none of the sort? Same deal, here. Due to the magic of the internet, there exists a video of Trump's full speech at this March 4, 2016 Cadillac rally, where he makes fun of 'Little' Marco Rubio and Lyin' Ted Cruz, but has nary a word about the assembled media.
Trump's modus operandi at that point in the campaign was to aim arrows at his opponents, not the media who were actually propping his campaign up with their coverage of him. This is what made me suspicious of "Sloppy Steve" Begnoche and his personal vignette. Watch the full video, he never once addresses or refers to the media at all. Begnoche made it all up to advance his proof that relied on a false proposition in the first place. Fake news is an enemy of the truth and of the people.

Steve has all that typical Ludington, "I feared for my life" crybaby ramblings, and then says, " Is the Press the enemy of the People? Nope. Unless one doesn't believe in Our Constitution...." Blah blah blah..... Yet, Steve reports exactly what He is told by those who violate the People, and their Constitution! Good thing I have a trash can next to me to vomit in.
French philosopher Albert Camus said: "A free press can, of course, be good or bad, but, most certainly without freedom, the press will never be anything but bad." Under Steve Begnoche's management, the COLDNews was shackled under his limited vision, fettered by his covetousness of social standing, and manacled by his failure to uphold the minimal standards of journalism which include truthfulness.
Where to begin. First of all, thanks for posting this excellent topic X. Begoche is a typical self serving news person who can't or won't see what the press has become. Just the fact that they are collectively attacking Trump and he cannot recognize why this is taking place is proof he has an obvious biased against conservative ideology.Over the years, as X stated, comparing what is written in the LDN does not match what actually happened at local meetings and other venues. X has done a great service by exposing LDN and local politician's underbelly's. Trump talks about lying Ted, well Ludington has lying Steve, Lying City Council and until recently lying Shay. It's sickening how people like Begonche have spent much of their careers stabbing the public in the back then turn around and blame someone like Trump who points the finger at the true liars and anarchists. Begonche and his ilk are doing more harm to America than any outside enemy could ever do. Yes Begoche you're part of a progressive movement that is doing it's best to overthrow a duly elected President and change America to something it was never meant to be. Begoche along with the mainstream media are liars and traitors. One last question for Begoche. Just how long do you think people are going be duped by your lies and just how stupid do you think the citizens are? Stay retired, nobody I know cares about your opinions.
There are definitely some people that need to stay retired and shut up now. Begnoche is certainly the prime media nut in Ludington that surely qualifies. I had two in-person conversations with him about 10 years ago, and both were one-sided to the max, I couldn't hardly get in one or two sentences about every 10 minutes over a 30 minute period. Talk about Narcissistic! Steve, go back where you belong, your home town of San Antonio, Tx., and STAY THERE! We don't need more of your convoluted thinking and vain editorials ever again!
We should be thankful that 300 newspapers showed their independence and integrity by running what was effectively 300 fake editorials claiming Trump called fair, objective media an enemy of the people. What they effectively shown in reality was their unfairness, elitism, and inability to verify the facts. If your newspaper ran an editorial claiming falsehoods as facts on August 16, 2018, just to show their 'collective independence', you know in the future that they will be untrustworthy. If your newspaper ran two editorials, like the COLDNews, you know they're editorial page and regular news is not worthy of your birdcage.
I so miss the days where we had real journalist. People like Cronkhite, Mudd and Brinkley brought us the news every night and you got exactly that, the news. No need to spin things one way or another, if something happened they told you exactly what happened and that was it. About the only one of the people mentioned above that you even had an inkling of what their political leanings might be was Cronkhite with his stance on Vietnam... other then that he was pretty solid. These days though, so much has changed... now its all about gothcha news, if they can give you a narrative and people go with it, that's all they care about... regardless of if its entirely true or not. While I'm not a fan or Trump (and definitely not a fan of Clinton), he's been right at times to call out the members of the media for the way they have covered his presidency. CNN in particular has not been a bastion of fair journalism to say the least... last year they ran with a story but had to retract it and 3 reporters ended up resigning over the debacle. There have been a few other times since that they have had a bit of an issue. In another example, a few months ago Trump was asked about the MS 13 gangs and responded that he thought they were animals... several media outlets ran with headlines (including ones that I usually find to be reasonably decent) ran with a headline suggesting that Trump had said that all immigrants were animals which was obviously not what he was saying. If the media wants to stop hearing the "fake news" thing being said there is a real easy way to get it to stop.... start reporting just the news, no spin... tell us what happened, give us the facts and those calls of "Fake news" go away.
The genesis of the Ludington Torch back in 2009 was largely due to the LDN's inability to represent individuals and objectively look at local public institutions, they were and are our area's fake news. I settled on using the term 'COLDNews' regularly back in 2012 after a couple of years of having them misrepresent the facts and their willingness to serve as a propaganda mill for the City of Ludington. They aren't bad at it, in that if you are unfamiliar with the facts, their articles will mostly seem fair and balanced. The layout of the paper is generally pretty professional, the proofreading is passable.
But the editorial bend is a bit leftward of our conservative county, their reportage of almost every public controversy seems biased towards what officials desire, and they're too lazy to dig farther than asking their influential friends and officials their take. They would work well with the elite Washington media.
Fake news will only go away if people demand it does and tune out. I don't see that happening since conservatives drift towards FOX and stay there, liberals drift towards MSNBC or CNN and stay there, and moderates generally aren't targeted, because those in the know believe they couldn't sustain spin-free news nowadays. Dark days for journalism, which is why we need more independent journalists out there who are dedicated to the truth without spin, even if it's not a good business model.
Very well said Dave, just report the facts of what is going on, without prejudice and leanings, that's true journalism, which most today have no idea of how to go about that.
In other news, I read that COLDnews fired all of their delivery drivers in favor of having the papers delivered via the post office.... one less reason to bother reading the paper.
Another thank you Dave, I see the same thing now on FB, and it's sickening to believe all those contracted carriers can be fired on a non-working work day of Saturday. Sorry for the workers and families affected in a negative financial perspective that don't deserve this now, and they, the LDN, I understand, NEVER, contributed to SS in any way, that's not even fair nor legal imho.
I think the LDN is having financial problems. It seems to me that the most reliable way to deliver the paper is from a daily route. The post office is less reliable especially when it comes to the delivery of bulk mail. I can see a lot of people getting the LDN a day late.
