The Mason County Sheriff's Department releases an inmate in nothing more than his boxer shorts in 19 degree temperature. The family brought clothes for their family member to wear upon exiting jail however the sheriff department refused them the right to give him clothes so he could properly leave the jail. How appalling and disgusting and disgraceful is this Mason County Sheriff Department under the direction of Kim cold?

His Mother wrote this on social media today.

I am responding to the video posted on social media regarding the recent release of my son from the Mason County Jail. The audio is of a conversation my son and I had on the Sunday before his release. He had been told that you leave with what you came in with and yes we joked about it because quite honestly I didn’t believe him as I could not Imagine that was true. So I brought clothes for him to wear back to the jail that afternoon and the officer at the window would not accept them and he said they are released the way they come in. (That video was never released.) I know all phone calls are recorded and monitored. If I were truly trying to set something up I certainly would not have had a conversation about it over the jail phone. When they refused to take the clothes for Nick and did release him as they said, I as a mother felt compelled to speak out and knew a photo would help make my point. I nor my son had anything to gain by posting the photo on social media. (The morning my son was released we took him to a rehab center out of town and he is not even aware that I posted anything or what has occurred since then.) My intention was solely to bring awareness to the way in which inmates were being released in hopes of getting the policy changed. Yes my daughter and I were there to pick up my son but there are many who have no family or anyone else to pick them up and these people need to have proper clothing, particularly during cold winter months. My son is an addict and I do not make excuses for his behavior but this whole thing has been misinterpreted as my way to make the MCSD look bad. I feel as if the MCSD is misconstruing the situation to look like it was a setup. It was not! The reasoning behind my actions was simply to bring awareness in hopes of getting the release policy changed. It is my understanding that Sheriff Cole has changed the policy. I took a stand and stood up for what I truly believe; every person has the right to be treated with respect. What was intended to be a simple Facebook post resulted in TV 9&10 contacting me for an interview which I now regret because they only aired a very small portion of my comments. In closing I would like to apologize to those whom I may have offended but am very grateful to know that the policy has been changed and future inmates will be released with dignity and respect in clothing to keep them protected from the weather.

I believe the jail did not allow him to change into the clothes she brought to him.

I also believe the Sheriff was right to acknowledge the problem and change the Policy.

I do not think it was fair for the Sheriff to later ... dub their phone conversation into the video.

That is a disgraceful misrepresentation of the facts of his discharge.

It does NOT air the actual conversation of his release.

It also makes the Mother and the Inmate look like conspirators in some vendetta against MCSO .

Again, this is disgusting!

Deplorable!

Instead of focusing on her sons misdeeds, criminal acts and embarrassing behavior she decides to stir the pot and create a controversy. The last thing I would have wanted was to thrust my family into the spot light after one of my children went off the reservation. Did she tell her son to set the bag down so she could take a picture? Talk about misleading the people on what took place. She may have gotten the Sheriff to change his policy but she also tarnished her family's reputation by exposing the World to her marauding son's behavior and her desire to make his all expense paid vacation at the jail a public spectacle.

Paid vacation? C'mon now, jail is NOT a vacation, unless you're talking about the place known as Hell Hole. What I saw in the video was Nick putting his black bag on the bench when his family dog greeted him warmly for 5 minutes. This isn't the first time Kim's facts have been intentionally misconstrued for the benefit of the MCSO/LPD/MC Courthouse either, and won't be the last. It's simply an expertly executed CYA, (Cover Your Ass), which is routine when you've been revealed for lack of ethics and humanity, to say the least. And that bag had no stolen goods in them, that would be evidence for the case, and never released. I really never read where he actually broke into the house, wasn't the door unlocked when he came in too? Either way, Cold got his pants pulled down, not thru any advance plans for sabotage, just poor policy and inhumane behavior that exists in our 21st century right in our tiny hometown of Ludville.

The controversy in my opinion is," Not Allowing an Inmate to bring in clothes to dress properly, when they exit the building."  Period!   Regardless of what the hell He did!

Where is the VIDEO showing "that conversation"  between the CO's and the INMATE where they deny him his clothes????

That's what I want to see!   Not just some "DOCTORED VIDEO" showing the inmate playing with a dog and a VOICED OVER PHONE CALL implying wrongdoing to the inmate and his Mother.

Where is that VIDEO??? The one that shows what the hell actually happened?

Are people willing to accept some topical conversation "after the fact" between the inmate and his Mother who were clearly joking, regarding the hideous policy?

Won't any of you call out the Sheriff for this BULLSHIT?

Well, it sure as hell is not the truth of the matter at hand which was REFUSAL TO BRING IN CLOTHES TO DRESS APPROPRIATELY!

Yes, the clothes were in a bag outside!

WHY???  Because they WERE NOT allowed inside!

That is the Topic.

The focus in this thread is Not what this man did to get to jail. That is apparent from his arrest report.

At this point I could care less what he did and if he ever does it again!

Why would the Sheriff come clean in the beginning and say OK, we messed up we will fix it and then this Doctored Video comes out disparaging the inmate and his family where this doctored video takes things out of context.

Who Doctored This Video?? Then released it? Well, it's an easy guess for me.

Was the Sheriff complicit with local media in releasing this Video with the VOICED OVER CONTENT?

That is what we should all be talking about right now.

We can talk about why he was in jail in the first place later!

You know what?

At the end of the day WE should ALL be thanking this Woman and Her son, regardless of what HE did! Why? Because now there will be a POLICY and it has already been discussed that Inmates leaving Jail should be clothed! This saves the City from future Liability, if someone left half clothed and died.

I know you big taxpayers are APPALLED and no one in your family will ever benefit from this HUMANITY, so just suck it up!

Thank these people! Go drop off some clothes!

Why????????????

Because You All represent yourselves as such FORGIVING Christians!  Now show your true colors, lol.

I just watched the video again of the guy walking out of the door with a black bag in his hand, he puts the bag down on the bench and walks towards the car and stops. If you watch it is clearly a photo op . Why would a person put down the bag on the bench, nobody was waiting right there to give him a hug , not even the dog. Even if  the police didn't let him dress inside , I myself would have sat down on the bench and put some shoes on and probably a shirt and coat that probably was in the bag. Yes , I see it as a photo op to cause trouble. And that's saying something for me as I don't particularly like any police.

I agree stump. If he was so cold why didn't he put some clothes on ASAP. Supposedly who ever picked him up had clothes for him or as I am assuming he had a bag full of them. Instead of making this guys mother out to be a hero who took on the Sheriff let us not forget her son is a criminal. From what I have seen, I would classify her as an enabler. Instead of just picking him up she turns the situation into a media circus. There are lots of druggies out there who are making life miserable for a lot of people and whether you like the Sheriff or not he has to deal with them and coddling them and acting as a social worker is not what he is paid to do.

Well, I know my true colors John Doe, and so do most of the others on this forum whom participate often. But this thread seems to be a stumbling block for many I have consistently agreed with for over 9 years here, strange. A lot of druggies and ex-druggies don't exactly act totally normal for the rest of their lives. They just don't do what most of us would given the circumstances, it's commonly known. I really don't think this was some staged act, as much as it was a way to make a simple humane fact known, that the MCSO policy didn't fit properly this time, and should not be continued into infinity. Two wrongs don't make a right, and CO's state this all the time to the public, while they actually do it themselves routinely. I just hope this young man Nick gets all the help in his addiction to survive and go forward as a positive adult. And, possibly, that the old policy is changed for the better so we don't have to witness this again in Ludington.

Even Sheriff Cole admits there wasn't any shoes in the bag, what I see is a man who has served his time and is leaving a facility without any CO escort with no shoes on, no confirmation that his ride is actually there, and due to the existing policy, this man on his way to a drug treatment facility was not able to dress appropriately for the weather.  As John notes, the sheriff releases a heavily-edited self-serving audio and video presentation that tries to paint the mother of a son who wasn't able to bring her son shoes and proper seasonal garb as a bad person for planning to show why the policy was stupid.

It's mostly a pointless exercise determining what you think of the Wrobles, its more poignant to focus on a sheriff's office who has had this long-held policy for awhile, including all the years that Kim Cole has been a deputy, then sergeant, and then, for the last six years, the sheriff.  And while I commend the sheriff for reworking the policy and allowing us to see some of the recorded record, I am appalled that his agents would take the time to make a presentation for a very friendly medium specially edited to portray both the policy-victim and his mother in such a bad light.  This stuff is precisely why challenging the corrupted systems around here is a dangerous occupation, and why few people do it.

I totally agree. That's why I don't even care what he did or what he will do again. I just can't get past this whole circus Act. It's like we have to foia the video inside the jail that includes his preparation for release to show how heinous and callus the sheriff department and these two local media's were in there intentional and willful slanderous propaganda attack. Absolutely unreal. I would love to get past this point so we could debate how this town really feels.

You have to remember, He was told He was leaving the building with the clothes he came in with. He called his Mother to tell her that.. She had an IT IS What It Is attitude. Her job was to get him out and move him on to treatment, whatever she had to do. They joked around about it, and made light of it, and took some photos as most would in his journey to recover. If you listened to their conversation all He wanted was to see the dog.The mother was happy he was out however it may be but, she was also concerned for others who may not have that support. That is why she posted the Post. Not to demean the jail. At that point in caring for her son's journey she also thought of others. He didn't need to get immediately dressed outside, his focus was on anything positive. What had been hard for him was behind him. You also have to understand his rational thinking is skewed from doing something on drugs, then basically having no drugs cold turkey confined in jail and his journey ahead. This family needed support as many families with addiction do. I don't excuse his behavior that got him in jail but, I wish him the best to recover.
