WHAT IS THE LAW, ORDINANCE, ETC...FOR BURNING TIRES

Does any body know the law...etc...for the burning of tires?  Is it a State Law, a County Law or Ordinance?  Are tires allowed to be burned?  I have tried to find this info, but it is rather vague at all Governmental levels.

Any ideas?  Thank-you!

It is not against the law to burn tires but it is against  State Law to openly burn tires, and there are most likely local ordinances against it as well. In other words the general public cannot burn tires but they can be burned for industrial use. The co-generation power plant in Manistee uses tires for a percentage of their fuel.

A. The open burning of tires is NOT allowed. The pollution emitted from this practice is highly toxic

and the thick black smoke produced obscures vision. Consider using natural or non-toxic materials

to ignite your brush pile. Many burn permits will identify acceptable or restricted accelerants that

can be used.

Q. How do I dispose of tires?

A. Scrap tires should be taken to a licensed tire disposal facility. Be aware that there

are regulations that restrict who can haul scrap tires and how long scrap tires can

be stored at a location that is not permitted. For more information about scrap tire

In researching your link you provided XLFD(read that while researching my initial question).

My question now is?  The various townships occasionally have "control burns" of various structures by the rural fire departments.  Would these rules, laws, etc apply to these townships who have these "practice control burns?" Would they be exempt from burning tires while knowingly, and purposely   setting a fire on an abandoned structure with the use of tires as an accelerator?    Anybody have knowledge of this?  Thanks again....

This subject is rather bothersome, due to the fact I cannot legally burn tires(which I would not do), but is it legal for rural fire departments to accelerate a structure fire using tires during a "control burn?"

Most all of what I researched for Michigan sends you back to the DEQ website page on scrap tires, which is informative enough, but doesn't tell you anything about where these registered collection sites are, nor answer your burning question.

May I presume that your question about rural fire departments use of scrap tires as accelerants is not hypothetical in nature?

Starting a fire with a tire would be impossible without a added accelerant. But once it was burning it is real hard to put out. If you just need to get rid of tires i wouldn't burn them. I know some tire shops charge for tire disposal, There must be some place to dispose of them without burning or dumping in the county ditches.

Back a few years ago a tire store in Big Rapids cuts the side walls off the tread the they were able to put all 3 pieces in a dumpster. Something about the void or air space in a whole tire and lack of compaction in the landfill. Sounds like a lot of work to cut the tire apart but they did it. Steve's tire in Scottville did take tires for a small fee might check with them.
