Law enforcement officers met at the Women’s Resource Center in Traverse City today to learn new techniques, for when they respond to domestic violence calls.Law enforcement are hoping to make the community more aware of domestic violence and, the impact it has.

But,in another story in the same city of the same police force, two employees with the Grand Traverse Sheriff's Department have been suspended without pay after charges were filed in an assault case.

Two employees with the Grand Traverse Sheriff's Department have been suspended without pay after charges were filed in an assault case.

According to Undersheriff Nate Alger, because the prosecutor filed charges charges against 31-year-old Amiee Johnson and 36-year-old Kenneth Chubb, the sheriff's department has decided to take action and suspend the two without pay.

Sgt. Johnson is charged with two counts of assault and battery and one count of disorderly drunk.

Deputy Chubb is charged with one count of assault and battery and one count of disorderly drunk.

The sheriff's office says an internal investigation into the actions of both officers will be completed by the sheriff's office after reviewing the police report from this incident and the final disposition of any court proceedings.

Traverse City Police Chief Jeff O'Brien said Aimee Johnson, who is a Sergeant at the county jail, and Kenneth Chubb, who is a Sheriff's Deputy, got into an altercation while off-duty Saturday night with staff at Little Bohemia Tavern, which located at 540 W. Front St. in Traverse City.

"The initial reason was that the female was told and the male was told that they were not going to be served alcohol inside of the bar, but they [bar staff] were going to offer them some food," said O'Brien. "They declined that and the female obviously became upset that she couldn't buy alcohol and that's what started the whole circumstances."

According to O'Brien, that is when the argument between Sgt. Johnson and staff escalated.

"She did assault one of the barkeeps and that brought the other barkeep in to escort her out and then when they got to the front door there was more of a fight and they ended up down on the ground," said O'Brien. "That's where the other male officer, the deputy, came in and grabbed one of the other barkeeps, pulled them off, pulled her off of the pile."

According to the police report, Deputy Chubb allegedly grabbed one of the female employees by the throat and picked her up.

O'Brien said there was physical evidence on both of the victims to support the arrests of assault and battery.

A PBT was conducted and Sgt. Johnson blew a .16 and Deputy Chubb blew a .07.

The Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office released a statement about the incident:

As a result of the Grand Traverse County Prosecutor's Office authorizing assault and battery and disorderly conduct charges on two Sheriff's Office employees, Corrections Sergeant Aimee Johnson and Road Patrol Deputy Ken Chubb have been suspended without pay. This suspension is a result of an initial review of the information that was provided to the Prosecutor's Office as well as a review of the employer's provisions within the employee's respective collective bargaining agreements. This suspension will continue until such time as the criminal complaints and investigation concludes.
At that time an internal investigation into the actions of both officers will be completed by the Sheriff's Office after reviewing the police report associated with this incident and the final disposition of any court proceedings.
The Sheriff's Office fully understands that any person charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty in court. However, with recent incidents around the country involving police conduct which have shown some questionable actions by police officers, this incident involving our officers does not help the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office in demonstrating to the public that our officers provide a high level of service and professionalism to our community. Incidents such as this undermine our ability to prove to the citizens of Grand Traverse County that each and every day our officers are dedicated to the service and protection of those who live here and that those officers are well trained and efficient in providing the best possible service to the public.
Law enforcement, curbing domestic violence with a choke hold!

Also, this assault done by anyone else would carry a charge of STRANGULATION!

Get mad, demand equal justice!

If the officers are guilty they should be fired not suspended. Maybe the Attorney General should look into this incident while he's prosecuting Ingham County Prosecutor Dunnings. Cops should have a Zero tolerance policy enforced on them. When little kids are kicked out of school for pointing their finger or gun shaped pop tart shouldn't adult law enforcement personnel be treated the same for much more real life offenses. .

Come on Willy, these are our Hero's don't ya know. They probably will get back on the job with back pay and any overtime they may have missed. Then everyone will go to the bar and have a few more drinks, laugh about how the system awards dirty cops.

When we expect our police agencies to investigate themselves or other departments that they frequently train with and are deployed with, we should expect no more than what we have.  When we expect our prosecutors to treat police the same as any other person when those police and their associated department(s) are instrumental in the prosecutor's success, we should expect no more than what we have.  Police and prosecutors are not effective at policing themselves, they have too many conflicts of interest involved in finding themselves innocent or minimizing punishments even when guilt is unquestionable.

Years ago I worked in a union shop. It was the same way, a person would do something that would get them fired and low and behold the union would get them back with some negotiations that made the company and the union look bad in the eye's of the good worker. I do believe that all police officers , state , county and city should be licensed by the state, any questionable activity by a police officer should be reviewed by a state board as is the rest of the required license holders of this state and all other states. If you have to be state licensed to cut someone's hair, build a deck, or repair your car. Why wouldn't a police officer have to be licensed to be able to assault you, shoot or even kill you, throw your ass in jail for whatever with basically no questions asked? doesn't make any since to me.

Good points X and stump
