New Haven Asks State to Allow Non-Citizens to Vote

As a United States Citizen, I'd be strongly protest any illegal immigrant being given the right to vote. They want the right to vote, they need to become citizens... there is no other way.... period!

New Haven Mayor John DeStefano plans to ask the state Legislature to allow illegal immigrants who live in the city to be able vote in municipal elections.

DeStefano said on Tuesday that the proposal would build a more engaged community and follows the lead of other cities, the New Haven Independent reports.

The Independent reports that New Haven has about 10,000  non-citizen immigrants.

Immigrants who are in the U.S. legally or illegally and cannot vote now would still be unable to vote in state or federal elections.

DeStefano, a Democrat, said illegal immigrants pay taxes indirectly through rent and send their kids to New Haven schools and should be able to vote.

New Haven made national headlines in 2007 when the city approved a program that provides municipal identification cards for all residents -- including illegal immigrants -- to provide access to services such as banking and the library.

Malloy told the New Haven Register, "it's not an idea that I'm particularly comfortable with."

The Democratic governor said he believes there are obligations and privileges that come with legal citizenship, but he's willing to "hear the mayor out" on his proposal.

If I were a citizen of New Haven I would start impeachment proceedings against this moron of a Mayor. Allowing illegals to vote is as stupid idea as any I have heard. What this means is that anyone from anywhere could vote in New Haven elections. Canadian citizens could cross the border on election day and vote. It never ceases to amaze me how ignorant some liberals can be, but, the people of New Haven elected him so what does that say about them. Another thing is the weak comment from the Governor who said "it's not an idea that I'm particularly comfortable with." His statement sends a message to the people of Connecticut that he is a spineless politician.  His comment should have been "hell no, that is the dumbest idea I have heard since Ludington Michigan hired John Shay".

To be fair, I saw video of the Governor commenting on the story and he didn't appear to have much faith in the idea... he sounded basically as if he was going to give the mayor a chance to say his thing but has really already made up his mind which is really the only position he should have anyway.

It's pretty evident the mayor doesn't own rental property either, property tax is paid by the owner, not the renter. When the homes are not rented out, does the owner not have to pay tax"s?

The illegals are gaining more and more rights, while the citizen are losing theirs, where's this country headed??

This is a real nightmare for any Mayor or Governor to address. It basically opens pandora's box on the subject matter, which in turn will down the road lead to the same being adopted throughout the nation later as the libs. keep pushing for overhauling illegal immigration rules. I hope it's squashed on the spot right now, and not given any serious consideration, now, nor in the future. As Michelle Bachman has repeatedly stated, the Law is the Law, period. Until such time the Law is changed, we continue to follow the Law. The libs. and shallow thinkers have criticized her repeatedly for that, and that isn't right imho. She and Paul are right, and don't get the credit they deserve for this stand.

I totally agree with Willy.  I could see this being passed by our progressive City Government here in Ludington, and it would be quite interesting in that they just passed law in 2011 that allowed them to expressly prohibit a registered Ludington, Michigan, USA citizen from voting in an election that he was running in. 

I think when a mayor or city manager makes such an obviously illegal and idiotic declaration as Mayor DeStefano has, that the legitimate citizens of that city should start petitions of recall and show him what democracy actually is.

Your missing the point. Nowhere does it say that Shay or the City has to grant access to X so he can enter City Hall even if he requests permission. All the order says is he can request access. It doesn't even mention that the City is obligated to grant permission or to even give X an answer to his request. It would be like X banning you from this forum and telling you that you require written  permission to continue to post. He may decide that he doesn't want you to post and needs no reason to explain why. He doesn't even need to respond to your request. This is how the City is operating regarding X's banishment from City hall. If you believe the City has the right to deny constitutional rights and due process to any citizen then your part of the problem.

Excellent rebuttal and analogy, Willy.  Heaven, if you use the weighted term of "stalking" to apply to making FOIA requests to determine whether the City is operating within the law (which I have frequently found they have not), then you are using that term very incorrectly.  If you want to make a case that I am harassing anyone at City Hall, you have an open forum here to state your strict proofs of such actions.

I was served a "letter of trespass" by the LPD after our City Manager made a police report filed as "Disorderly Conduct" by the responding officer Sergeant Dean Schultz in which CM Shay stated my use of a link to the Ludington City Assessor's site in a blog article warranted an unconstitutional restriction of my use of public property.  That sounds more like stalking behavior to me, but I may be biased.
